Motor Running But Door Not Moving?
We can fix it.

If you can hear your garage door motor running, see the chain or belt moving, but the door itself stays completely still, you've got a mechanical disconnect somewhere in the drive system.

This is a frustrating but surprisingly common problem, and it typically points to one of three specific issues: a stripped drive gear, a disengaged trolley, or a broken spring preventing movement.

The good news? This is almost always repairable on the same day by an experienced Barnard Castle engineer.

Straight answer

Repair or replace?

Most motor-running-but-not-moving issues are fixable with a component replacement or simple reconnection. We'll always be honest if full motor or door replacement makes more financial sense, but in our experience, over 90% of these cases are resolved with a targeted repair.

Usually a Repair if:

  • Your opener is under 10 years old
  • Only one component has failed (gear, spring, or trolley)
  • The motor itself runs smoothly
  • The door and frame are structurally sound

Consider Replacement if:

  • The motor is 15+ years old with multiple issues
  • Internal motor components are seized or damaged
  • The door itself is warped, rusted, or unbalanced
  • You want to upgrade to a quieter or smart opener
Quick answers

Good to know

Why does the motor run but the door doesn't move?
This happens when the motor is working, but the connection between the motor and the door has failed. The most common causes are a stripped drive gear (a small plastic cog inside the motor housing), a disengaged trolley (if someone pulled the emergency release cord), or a broken spring making the door too heavy for the motor to lift.
Can I fix it myself?
If the trolley is disengaged (check if a red cord near the motor was pulled), you can usually reconnect it by pulling the release handle towards the motor while the door is closed. For stripped gears or broken springs, we strongly recommend calling a professional—springs are under extreme tension and can cause serious injury if mishandled.
What's a stripped drive gear and why does it happen?
The drive gear is a small plastic cog inside the motor that connects the motor shaft to the chain or belt. Over time, especially with heavy doors or frequent use, the teeth on this gear wear down and can no longer grip. It's a very common failure point in garage door openers, especially those over 7-10 years old.
How long does a repair take?
Most repairs for this issue take 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the cause. Replacing a stripped gear or reconnecting a trolley is relatively quick, while spring replacements take longer due to the tension adjustment required. We carry common parts on the van to avoid delays.
Will this happen again?
If we replace a worn component with a quality part and ensure your door is properly balanced, it should last for years. We also check the overall system during the repair—if your door is too heavy or unbalanced, we'll address that to prevent premature wear on the new parts. All replacement parts come with a 12-month warranty.
